Just over an hour away is the Galle Fort, an absolute treat for history lovers. It’s the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by colonial occupiers; first the Portuguese in 1588 and then the Dutch in the 17th century.

Within it, inhabitants lives go on. Among the compellingly spots are the Dutch Reformed Church known as Groote Kerk, All Saints Church, the lighthouse, the National Maritime Archeology Museum, the National Museum, the Historical Mansion Museum and characterful functioning centuries old buildings. Wonder along by foot or bicycle and meander through, curio shops, antiques, eateries and pubs dotting its narrow lanes.
